Here are the steps from the permit class to your driver license, in the order they happen. Each step shows where it happens, and the rules link to the DPS or TDLR page they come from.
At this school
Texas requires a 6-hour driver education course for ages 18 to 24.
You learn what the road signs and signals mean, who has to wait at a stop or a light, and that a driver cannot drink and then drive.
At 25 or older the course is not required. DPS still recommends it for a first license.
A new resident 18 or older who turns in a valid license from another state does not have to take the course.

Book your first DPS appointment early. We recommend booking as soon as you can, because dates can be hard to find.
DPS takes appointments only. If your office has no dates, try another office or check back for cancellations.

You already went to DPS for your learner permit. After you pass the road test here, you finish your driver license on the Texas.gov website, so you do not go back to DPS.
If you are not a US citizen, you may have to go to a DPS office and show proof you are allowed to be in the United States, such as a green card, or a foreign passport with a visa and an I-94 entry record. DPS calls that proof lawful presence.
